Guru Stotram by Adi Shankaracharya

The Sanskrit shloka means that Guru is the representative of Brahma, Vishnu & Shiva. He creates and sustains knowledge and destroys the weeds of ignorance. Ignorance of literacy as well as proper conduct.

The duty of a teacher is not just limited to imparting knowledge of facts & figures to their pupils. Rather it is a dynamic job that involves shaping them for future challenges and uncertainties. The most crucial part of rearing a child is to make him capable of taking decisions. His ability to form his own opinion and world view go a long way in forming a productive and conscientious adult. In the words of Margaret Mead, “Children must be taught how to think not what to think.”

The work of a volunteering teacher demands much more time and attention. It also involves counselling them in times of need. The underprivileged children don’t have the basics to survive and live all their lives hand to mouth. In such a state of affair, providing them with an environment to flourish and grow is considered a luxury by their less fortunate parents. The school provides them with that setting but they struggle even to get admitted into public schools. The teaching volunteers coordinate and ensures the children get into school and win over their right to education.

They do not have the accessibility of even basic healthcare facilities. In the time of urgent medical intervention, it falls upon the volunteering teacher to take the lead and be present as a support to the family. In such times UPAY provides them with financial & moral support.

Poverty is a very hard taskmaster. It shapes people differently. Even the children grow with different intellectual abilities and it is upon the Guru to sparkle diamonds as well as polish pebbles with patience. For nobody knows what value the pebble holds.
“All students can learn and succeed but not in the same way and not on the same day.”

Teaching them values & imparting knowledge are quintessential to a teacher but to thrive, a person needs marketable skill. Through the SAMARTH initiative, UPAY is developing skills among them. To enable the women to gain financial freedom & to free them from oppressive shackles of widespread patriarchy.

Principally, the work of a volunteer teacher is a thankless one, he has to spend his time & effort without expecting anything in return, following the philosophy of Nishkam Karma. But it brings an immense sense of self-satisfaction at the end of the day, to do something so meaningful. We’re grateful to our teachers who put all the efforts to shape the lives of the underprivileged children and liberate the young mids through education and empowerment in true sense. This teacher’s day, we honour the teachers for their selfless service and love.
