Karol Bagh Annual Day – Celebration of a milestone

After extensive surveys and an immense effort by the volunteers, the Karol Bagh centre of UPAY was started about a year back, in September 2017.

A recent call with the zonal director handling the Karol Bagh Center of UPAY left me completely surprised and in awe. The Karol Bagh centre has seen many hurdles; unfriendly neighbourhoods, non-availability of a classroom venue, low attendance; but has managed to adapt, improvise and overcome these challenges.

“Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it” – Michael Jordan

This is exactly what the Karol Bagh team did. They did not let logistical issues get in the way of imparting education to the children who deserve it. The team has managed to gain the trust of the guardians of the children, built a healthy rapport with the guardians and the well-wishers of UPAY, find alternative venues to teach and continued to work relentlessly toward improving the lives of the children. This hard work had been paying off in the form of progress of the children.

Although we may not have yet achieved the bigger goal yet, we must, as Nelson Mandela said, ‘remember to celebrate milestones as we prepare for the road ahead’. And as part of this celebration, the Karol Bagh team organised a program on 21st October, with a mix of culture, competition, fun and talent exhibits.
It was amazing to see the confidence of some of the children, reciting poems, acting in skits, giving a speech and having tons of fun! The children are full of ambition and hope and UPAY has had a big role to play in nurturing them.
Speeches by the volunteers reflected the general sentiment of the volunteers of UPAY – that they see it as an opportunity to serve the community, help the less privileged and make the world a better place.
The date is very close to Dussehra, which marks the victory of good over evil, and this was the theme in one of the programs which addressed the evil or the ‘Raavan’ inside of us and how we need to face it and triumph over it.

The team spirit of the Karol Bagh centre was once again at display in the arrangements of the event, from sponsorships to logistics of food and transport. In the words of a volunteer at Karol, everyone takes their work very seriously and takes ownership of responsibility. The volunteers work like a well-oiled machine to achieve a common goal.
As I mentioned even in my previous blog, volunteers are the backbone of an organisation like UPAY and we will be in debt of the excellent people volunteering at Karol Bagh centre, for they are the ones that have helped the centre reach where it is today. The completion of 1 year at Karol Bagh is a testament to what desire, dedication and teamwork can accomplish. Its when ordinary people rise above the expectations and seize the opportunity that milestones are reached.

I would like to thank Mithila and Ankit for taking the time out to speak with me that helped me write this blog. I wish them and the entire team of Karol Bagh a big congratulations and all the very best for the future and many such milestones.
